Each year the RTBU continues its advocacy for properly funding our network to both underpin growth and job security, as well as security and resources that make the network improvements possible.
We do this because we understand the importance of advocating at all levels of the community not just with employers to get the job done for members. This involves advocacy with state and federal governments for funding and legislative changes, as well as working with the community and NGOs to ensure the voice of fairness echoes loudest with decision makers.
With the majority of transport funding and network planning occurring at a state level through the department of transport and planning, each year we make representations for and then report to members on the outcomes of the state budget.
This year’s budget continues to deliver on statewide upgrades in our industry and build on the issues raised for attention by your union. Beyond delivering the first budget surplus since 2018-19, this budget delivers $5 billion in funding and initiatives of interest to RTBU members are as follow:
- $4.1b for Sunshine Superhub and Airport rail commencement (works start early 2026)
- $727 million for final testing, recruitment, timetabling, training and passenger communications to open the Metro Tunnel
- $162 million bus service uplift with a focus on connecting people with train station transport hubs
- Free Public Transport for children under 18 and seniors on weekends will boost patronage and demand for staffing.
- Additional metropolitan services on Werribee, Craigieburn, Upfield and Sandringham lines
- Additional regional services on Traralgon, Seymour and Bendigo lines
- $98.1m extra for accessible tram stops along Droop St and Footscray Hospital and other infrastructure to support Next Generation Trams
- $82m for regional freight line upgrades
- $149.1m for V/Line passenger maintenance uplift
- Platform tactile upgrades at Heidelberg, North Richmond, Ferntree Gully and Upper Ferntree Gully
- CCTV improvements at 6 stations along the Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat lines
- Additional $3.1m to enhance the capacity of Wage Inspectorate Victorian
