The Victorian Branch of the RTBU is one of the leading unions in the state. Our union has a proud and militant past and has a long history of involvement in industrial and political issues in Victoria.

The RTBU is the Industry Union covering members across all rail and tram operations in Victoria.

The RTBU comprised of six divisions

  • Infrastructure
  • Locomotive
  • Fleet Manufacture, Overhaul, Maintenance & Service (Workshops)

As an all grades union we have coverage over all employees in the industry across a wide range of trades and occupations.

The Victorian Branch is part of the national RTBU which has members in all states and territories. The Victorian Branch has a democratic structure and is governed by Branch Council and Branch Executive and by Divisional Committes of Management and these bodies are made of elected officials and delegates both full time and honorary.

Union History

The Rail, Tram and Bus Union (the RTBU) covers all employees in the rail, tram and bus industry.

The RTBU was created in 1993, but its history and roots as far back as the 1860's.

The RTBU was created from the amalgamation of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen (AFULE), The Australian Railways Union(ARU), the Australian Tramways and Motor Omnibus Employees Association (ATMOEA), and the small National Union of Railway workers (NURWA).

It is now one of Australia's major industry based Unions. More

Welcome to the RTBU

The Victorian branch of the rail Tram & Bus Union (RTBU) has over 7000 members across 6 Divisions in the passenger rail, tram and rail freight business and has coverage of all grades in rail and tram including driving, operations, infrastructure and workshops.

The RTBU is the industry union in public transport.

The RTBU represents its members on every issue affecting their working lives in areas such as health and safety, collective agreements, job security and discrimination.

Our union has been in continuous existence since the last half of the C19th and has beem immersed in industrial and political struggles since that time.

Our delegate structures are vibrant and active in dealing with every challenge thrown up by management or governments and our union puts its stamp on every issue affecting the industry. More
